Individual Journal-The Lottery
I think the Lottery began with a
nice situation and a comfortable weather which is match for annual year
celebration or carnival. The people of the village began to gather in the square
like they have been waiting this ritual.
I imagine that the people have a good relationship because they were
gather every year. They had been talked for everything and looks so close. The
story tells how the households draw slips of paper without looking at them
until every head of household has a slip. And person who get a black spot slip
is the sacrifice. They have been prepare a great pile of stone to stoned the
sacrifice. How a animal behavior!!!
The ritual was supposed to sacrifice
a person for the benefit of the village by chosen one person randomly. They
continues the ritual because this is a local tradition which has been practiced
to ensure a good harvest. ‘Lottery in
June, corn be heavy soon’. They think that a person sacrifice can make them
have a good life and to transfer their sins to the person, so god will give them a good harvest. And
they think that it is fair, because they choose people randomly. All of people
in the village can be chosen, kid, adult, man, woman or the elder person. So
they could laugh together and told a joke when a person take the slip of paper.
This is usually for them. The reason why the official of the lottery looking
for Clyde Dunbar, because no one could escape or hide from this ritual.
Surprisingly, they realize that their family can be killed too, but they
allowed it happen. I sad when someone gave little Davy, Mrs. Hutchinson’s son,
a few pebbles. It means that legal to stoned his mother until dead. If I were
little Davy, I chose to offer myself as replacement of my mother. But not just
little Davy, ‘Mrs. Delacroix selected a
stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands and turned to Mrs. Dunbar.
“Come on” she said. “Hurry up.”’ Before it, Mrs. Delacroix had conversation
with Mrs. Hutchinson and show that they were friend. This is show that people
tend to hold to a tradition, although it is out of logical argument.
I
shocked after read the story. I don’t think that people permission this inhuman
behavior. From the story, we know that the ritual have been happened for a long
time, ‘before Old Man Warner, the oldest
man in town was born’, how could they kill a person every years? And if I were
the villager, I wouldn’t take part in the ritual. This is out of logical.
Because there’re no relation between good harvest and person who sacrifice.
Died people couldn’t do anything to make the benefit of the village, moreover
to make their plants grow well. I think this is just unreason traditional
ritual which have done for a long time.
Related
to the story, this is real happen in India. Because parents allowed their
daughter to rape or was sold in prostitution. They think, girl isn’t important,
a second class position and couldn’t make a better life for her family. So, if
they sold their daughter, she will produce
money, although just a little bit money. Another, the story remind me
with movie Apocalypto, which has the same plot. The main idea of the movie is
sacrifice for god of sun.
